UCSD Chapter History

The UCSD chapter of Project Nicaragua was founded by a team of twelve undergraduate volunteers under the direction of Stanley Park in January of 2007 as the San Diego extension of an existing Project Nicaragua based in Los Angeles. We inherited much of the Project’s mission, infrastructure, and relationships with Nicaragua, and hope to become an autonomous chapter, and to expand upon what has already been done to bring us closer to achieving Project aims. Thus far, we have helped secure the Project’s non-profit status, contributed thousands in fundraising, and solidified multiple Project collaborations with other public health organizations, in addition to spreading the word about the Project throughout the San Diego community. We are now the premier international health organization on the UCSD campus with over 30 active members, and have elicited the support of many UCSD administrators, scientists, physicians, and surgeons. We completed our first trip as a Chapter in September of last year, and strive to continue improving the quality of healthcare in Nicaragua for its people.
