This was the first UCSD Chapter trip, the culmination of half a year’s worth of planning and fundraising. Our mission for this trip was to bring neurosurgical equipment and education supplies to the National Neurosurgery Service based at El Hospital Antonio Lenin Fonseca in Managua as well as continue ongoing research efforts investigating the prevalence of spina bifida and barriers to healthcare in Nicaragua. We were also given the privilege to shadow the neurosurgeons and emergency room physicians at El Hospital Antonio Lenin Fonsea . Also, we completed a site evaluation of Lenin for our collaboration with the International Neurosurgical Children’s Association (INCA), and met with physicians from AMOS Health and Hope (AMOS) to solidify future plans for the prevalence study.
