UCLA History

The need for Project Nicaragua arose in the December 2004 when a team of UCLA medical students went to El Hospital Antonio Lenin Fonseca to study the high occurrence of spina bifida in the area.

Under the supervision of UCLA’s world-renowned pediatric neurosurgeon Dr. Jorge Lazareff, these students had the privilege of shadowing their Emergency Room facility and even some of the neurosurgeries.

Their experiences during their 10-day stay at the destitute hospital convicted them to continually serve these doctors by providing in tools, supplies and books in the future. This is what Project Nicaragua hopes to accomplish.
